What Size Dog Bed Do I Need? A Simple Breed-by-Breed Guide

Picking a dog bed sounds simple — until you're staring at M, L, XL and XXL with no idea which one fits your floppy 70-pound goofball. Order too small and your dog hangs off the edge. Too big isn't really a problem (more room to sprawl), but nobody likes overpaying for space their pup won't use. Here's how to get it right the first time.

The 30-second rule

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they're standing or stretched out, then add 6–12 inches. That extra room lets them fully stretch instead of curling into a tense little ball all night. Dogs that sprawl (we see you, Labs and Goldens) lean toward the higher end; tidy curlers can go lower.

How to measure in under a minute

  • Length: nose to base of tail.
  • Width: from the tip of one outstretched paw to the other when they're lying on their side.
  • Round up, add the 6–12 inches, and match it to the size chart on the product page.

Rough size-by-build cheat sheet

  • M — small & small-medium breeds (Frenchies, Beagles, Shibas, Cockers).
  • L — medium-large (Border Collies, Aussies, Boxers, smaller Labs).
  • XL — large breeds (Labs, Goldens, German Shepherds, Dobermans).
  • XXL — giant breeds & serious sprawlers (Great Danes, Mastiffs, Bernese, or two dogs who like to share).

Sharing households: if two dogs pile onto one bed, size up a notch — everyone sleeps better.
